The Talisman is a new character customization feature added inDiablo III. The Talisman aims to carry Diablo II's Charm system into the new game, while alleviating the inventory space problems that they caused. In the new system, the Talisman UI can be found on the Character screen and will house a player's Charms, removing the need to carry them in the inventory. The problem that arose in Diablo II was that players had to sacrifice inventory space if they wanted to carry charms. While the intent was probably to make players choose whether or not to use charms, in reality they were so powerful that you eventually just amassed enough charms to all but fill your inventory space.

Players will begin the game with only one Talisman slot available, but more will open as the character levels, eventually providing 13 slots to fill with Charms. It is at this time unknown whether charms all come in one size, or if there are any other limitations besides just Talisman space imposed on charms.

Diablo III's Charms will function almost identically to those in Diablo II. They are random-world drops that spawn with random bonuses. However, unlike Diablo II, where nearly any bonus could spawn on Charms, Diablo III's Charms will focus more on key attributes, like strength or life. This is intended to help players make up for the loss of stat customization brought on by auto-stat distribution. Because of this, it seems unlikely we'll see any "skillers" (charms that provide + skills) appear in Diablo III.
